Bitcoin and Ethereum Algo Trading: How It Works in India

Why most crypto algo strategies trade Bitcoin and Ethereum, how BTC and ETH differ for an automated strategy, and what you need to start on an Indian exchange.

Bitcoin and Ethereum algo trading means running an automated strategy on BTC or ETH, usually on their perpetual futures. These two coins are where most algo trading starts, for practical reasons: they have the deepest markets, the longest price history, and they are listed on every exchange.

Why BTC and ETH suit automated strategies

  • Liquidity: there are always buyers and sellers close to the current price, so an order fills near where the strategy expected. On a thinly traded coin, the gap between the expected and the actual price can eat the edge.
  • History: years of clean price data exist, so a strategy can be tested across a bull market, a crash and a long sideways period. A coin that launched last year cannot offer that.
  • Availability: every exchange AlgoPulse connects to lists BTC and ETH perpetuals, so a strategy built on them can run wherever your account is.
  • Lower listing risk: a small coin can be delisted or lose its market overnight. That is very unlikely for the two largest.

How BTC and ETH differ

  • Volatility: ETH typically moves more in percentage terms than BTC. The same leverage therefore carries more risk on ETH.
  • Price per coin: one BTC costs far more than one ETH, which affects the smallest position you can open.
  • Behaviour: the two often move together, especially in sharp falls. Running the same kind of strategy on both is less diversification than it looks.

Minimum sizes

Each exchange sets a smallest order for each contract. On Delta Exchange India, for example, the minimum is 0.001 BTC or 0.01 ETH. Your investment multiplied by leverage and position size has to produce at least that much per trade. On AlgoPulse the deploy screen checks this against the exchange's live rules and tells you before you commit.

Single-coin and multi-coin strategies

Some strategies are tuned to one coin and are offered only on that coin. Others can run on any pair they were tested on. A single-coin strategy leaves one less decision to get wrong: you cannot accidentally deploy it on a market it was never tested on. On AlgoPulse the deploy screen only offers the pairs a strategy supports on your exchange.

What a BTC or ETH backtest should show

  1. The period tested, and whether it includes both a strong rise and a deep fall.
  2. Maximum drawdown, and how long the strategy took to recover from it.
  3. The number of trades. A handful of trades proves very little.
  4. Whether trading fees were included.
  5. Results year by year, not only the total.

AlgoPulse backtests run on three years of real BTC and ETH market data. Our guide to reading a backtest report explains each figure.

Where you can run it in India

Delta Exchange India, CoinDCX, Pi42, Shark Exchange and CoinSwitch PRO all list BTC and ETH perpetuals, and so does Bybit. They differ in the currency your margin is held in and in their fees. Each has a page under supported exchanges, and crypto futures algo trading explained covers margin and leverage.

Questions people ask

Should I start with BTC or ETH?

Start with whichever the strategy you have read and understood was built for. If both are possible, BTC's smaller percentage swings make it the gentler first deployment at the same leverage.

Can I run strategies on both at once?

Yes, one account can run several deployments. Remember that BTC and ETH tend to fall together, so two long positions are closer to one larger bet than to two independent ones.

What about other coins?

Strategies exist for other large coins too, where an exchange lists them. The smaller the coin, the more the liquidity and history points above work against you.
