Free vs Paid Algo Trading Software: What You Actually Pay For
The real costs of algo trading software: subscriptions, profit shares, exchange fees and hidden limits. How to compare free and paid tools before you start.
Free algo trading software can be just as capable as paid software, and paid software is not automatically safer or more profitable. The price tells you how the company earns money, not how good the strategies are. What matters is knowing every cost you will actually bear, including the ones no platform controls.
The costs that exist whatever you choose
- Exchange trading fees: charged by the exchange on every order. No algo platform, free or paid, can waive them.
- Funding: perpetual futures charge or pay a funding rate while a position is open.
- Slippage: the difference between the price a strategy expected and the price it got.
- Tax: owed on your profits whichever tool placed the trades.
For an active strategy these usually add up to more than any subscription. A tool's price is the smaller part of the cost of trading.
How paid software charges
- Monthly or yearly subscription: a fixed amount whether you profit or not.
- Tiers: a low entry price, with more strategies, more deployments or faster execution on higher plans.
- Profit share: a percentage of what you make, sometimes with a high-water mark.
- Strategy marketplace: the platform is cheap or free, and individual strategies are rented from their authors.
- Per-trade or per-order charges on top of the exchange's own fees.
How free software pays for itself
Nothing runs for free, so it is fair to ask where the money comes from. The common answers:
- Exchange partnerships: the exchange pays the platform for bringing it trading customers, out of the fees you would have paid anyway.
- A paid tier above the free one.
- Open source: free software you host and maintain yourself, paying in time and server cost instead.
Be wary of one answer in particular: a "free" tool that asks for withdrawal permission on your API key, or asks you to deposit money with it. Neither is needed for trading.
What to compare, apart from price
- Limits on the free plan: number of strategies, deployments or exchanges.
- Whether paper trading and live trading are both included.
- The backtest: full report with drawdown and fees, or only a headline figure.
- API key permissions: trade-only should be enough.
- Where strategies run: on their servers or on your machine.
- Whether a card is required to start, and how easy it is to leave.
When paying makes sense
- You need to build and test your own strategies, and the builder is the product.
- You trade a market or an exchange that only a paid tool supports.
- You need features a free tool does not offer, such as very fast execution or custom indicators.
When free is enough
- You want to run strategies that are already built and tested.
- Your exchange is supported.
- You are starting out and want to learn how a strategy behaves before committing to a recurring cost.
Where AlgoPulse stands
AlgoPulse is free: no subscription, no card and no paid tier. You still pay your exchange's normal trading fees, and funding where it applies. The pricing page lists exactly what is and is not free.
It is also limited in ways a paid builder is not: the strategies are pre-built, and there is no tool for writing your own. How to choose a crypto algo trading platform sets out when another kind of tool is the better fit.
Questions people ask
Is free algo trading software safe?
Safety depends on the API key's permissions and on your funds staying on the exchange, not on the price. A paid tool with withdrawal access is riskier than a free one with a trade-only key.
Do paid strategies make more money?
There is no reason to assume so. Judge a strategy by its full backtest and by how it behaves live at a small size, not by what it costs.
What is the cheapest way to start?
A free platform, an exchange with low fees, low leverage, and the smallest position that clears the exchange's minimum order.
